We’re teaming up with entertainers, artists and cultural icons on ourWatch With Me series on Google TV to share their top picks and give you a behind-the-scenes look at the TV and movies that inspired them.
Musician and Tony Award-winning actor Leslie Odom Jr. believes the best storytelling makes you truly feel something — both as the performer and as the viewer. Leslie explains, “If you’re lucky as an artist, you work on something that you’re inspired to work on.” And he’s inspired most by film and TV that incorporate music in new ways.
Leslie also loves the challenge of a spooky story. “It’s great fun to look in the face of something that scares you and survive it,” he says.
We sat down with Leslie to dig in more on his favorite film and TV show picks.
What did you learn from making your watchlist?
Leslie Odom Jr.:Making this watchlist reaffirmed for me that I like well-made things. I like miracles. I like when something special is made that took tremendous planning, preparation and craftsmanship.
Which genre do you go back to over and over again?
Odom: Horror is my favorite genre and contains so much. There’s funny horror movies, thrillers and suspense. Those were some of the biggest movies of the ‘80s and of my childhood that set me on this horror fan path.
How did you persuade your parents to let you watch horror as a kid?
Odom: My parents knew that those movies brought me such joy, and they didn’t want to keep me from that joy.
Who do you nerd out with when it comes to film and TV?
Odom: My father-in-law is in the [entertainment] business and is probably the person that I connect with most about movies. We talk about everything from performances and directors to hopes and dreams. He loves movies, too.
Do you experience movies differently when you’re by yourself?
Odom: I was in my twenties the first time I went to the movies by myself. I didn’t know you could do that. I would stay all day and see back-to-back movies.
What are your must-haves for the best viewing experience at home?
Odom: The best sound system you can afford, frozen yogurt and a comfy couch.

Based on parents’ feedback, we redesigned Family Link to bring our tools to the forefront and make them easier to use. Across the Controls, Location and Highlights tabs, you’ll find new experiences like “Today Only” screen time limits, alerts for when your children arrive and leave a location and recommended content from trusted partners around online safety.
For easier access, parents and their children can also access Family Link online in a new web experience. Stay tuned for these changes to start rolling out today and complete over the next few weeks.
Google TV is an entertainment experience made for the whole family and its kids profiles are easy to use for kids of all ages. With the addition of managed watchlists, Google-powered kids recommendations and supervised accounts on YouTube, Google TV’s kids profiles just got even more helpful.
Bringing recommendations and watchlists to kids profiles makes it easier to find the perfect shows and movies. Kids can easily browse top entertainment from their approved apps, and you can build a “must watch” list just for them from their TV and mobile device. And for parents with older kids who are ready to move on from YouTube Kids, their tweens can now use a supervised Google Account to start exploring YouTube on their Google TV kids profile. These updates will also start rolling out today and complete over the next few weeks.

As a dad to a toddler, kids profiles on Google TV have been a life-saver in my house. My son has his own space to watch his favorite movies and shows like “Paw Patrol.” I can also decide what apps he watches, set ratings for him and manage his screen time.
But I know how I use kids profiles will change as my son gets older. We’ve learned that families have different preferences depending on the age of their kids. So today, we’re introducing three features that make kids profiles even better for the whole family, no matter what age your kids are.
Have you ever been looking for something to watch and see a movie or show your kids might love? Now you can watchlist it for them. With parent-managed watchlists on kids profiles, you can create a “must-watch” list for your kids directly from your own profile. Just click on the movie or show, press the watchlist button and select your kids profile watchlist. The next time your kids are watching TV, their watchlist will be waiting for them right on their kids profile’s home screen.
Set up a parent-managed watchlist for your kids profiles
When your kids finish their favorite show, they might not be sure what to watch next. But with Google-powered recommendations on kids profiles, finding new things to watch just got easier. They can now discover popular movies and TV shows right on their profile’s home screen, based on the apps you’ve added and the rating settings you’ve set. We’ve also added a new “hide” button, which allows you to hide a title from the Popular movies or Popular TV shows rows you aren’t interested in. Just press and hold the Select button on the remote and select “hide.”

Families visit YouTube to have fun, learn, explore new interests and dive deeper into the things they love. If you have older kids in your home that are ready to move on from YouTube Kids, Google TV now supports a supervised experience on YouTube, so they can start exploring more of what YouTube has to offer with their Google TV kids profile. This experience comes with content settings for pre-teens and older, adjusts the features your child can use, and lets you block channels and manage additional controls through the YouTube mobile app.

We’ve come pretty far since the original Chromecast launched 9 years ago. Here’s how we’ve evolved — and what you can expect from the new Chromecast with Google TV (HD).
Chromecast originally launched as a $35 dongle that made it easy and inexpensive to bring your online entertainment to your TV. At the time, this was a big deal: you could browse the web, watch TV shows and movies, and listen to music simply by plugging it into the back of your TV and connecting the device to Wi-Fi.

In the beginning, Chromecast launched with just a handful of partners: Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies and Google Play Music. Nine years later, there are 10,000+ apps to choose from with Google TV, from HBO Max and Disney+ to Prime Video, and we continue to add new content all the time. Google TV’s content offerings go beyond entertainment as well — you can work out with Peloton right from their app, for example.
And with more content choices than ever before, Chromecast with Google TV has helped reinvent what simple and easy content discovery on your TV looks like. It’s the home for your entertainment, bringing together movies, shows, live TV and more so you can find what to watch without jumping from app to app.
In 2013, you could use your phone, tablet or laptop with Chromecast to browse and cast content to your TV, play and pause, control the volume and more. Actress, producer and director Kerry Washington believes movies and TV have the power to influence us as individuals, and ultimately change the world. “When you step into a story and see yourself immersed in a part of the world that you’ve never been exposed to,” Kerry says, “that’s a magical experience.”
Kerry’s love for movies started when she was a young “latchkey kid” in the Bronx. Movies and TV helped connect her with others and feel a sense of belonging. “When you can connect to a story, you can connect more deeply to your humanity,” Kerry says. “ That’s why we watch, to be human and to connect to ourselves and each other.”
We sat down with Kerry to dig in more on her favorite movie and TV picks.
What do you think your watchlist says about you?
Kerry Washington: A lot of the films I love are about compassion, belonging and finding your way.
Are there specific moments where you used movies or TV to escape?
Washington: I am an only child and spent a lot of time alone. The people in shows? They were my friends.
What inspired you to create your YouTube series Street You Grew Up On?
Washington: I was so excited when we started our series, Street You Grew Up On. It was really fun because the whole point is that we are each the center of our own story. It’s really fun to talk to people we admire about the “once upon a time” in their life.
What new frontiers and environments interest you in movies and TV?
Washington: There’s all this attention on sci-fi and space travel, but [I think] there’s more real estate in the ocean that’s unexplored than in space. I think there’s magic to discover down below.
Your watchlist features many movies with mermaids. Do you believe in mermaids?
Washington: As a child, I really did think that maybe I was part mermaid. To this day, I keep trying to convince my kids that my DNA breakdown includes a percentage of mermaid.
Can movies or TV shows make any change in the world?
Washington: One of the things that I love about being a storyteller is that you really do see that hearts and minds are transformed by the best narratives.
Is it a crime to text during a movie?
Washington: I try to silence notifications so that when I’m watching, I can have as sacred an experience as possible.
Do you watch credits all the way through?
Washington: In my house, we watch the credits all the way through out of respect for the people I work with. The credits that matter the most are not just ones at the beginning of the show. It’s the folks at the end of the show that also make it happen.
