Google Workspace Updates Weekly Recap – June 24, 2022

Unless otherwise indicated, the features below are fully launched or in the process of rolling out (rollouts should take no more than 15 business days to complete), launching to both Rapid and Scheduled Release at the same time (if not, each stage of rollout should take no more than 15 business days to complete), and available to all legacy Google Workspace and G Suite customers. 


Frictionless sharing across Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides 
In the effort to make collaboration simpler for users, we've introduced a new sharing experience in Workspace. Now, when you click the "Share" button in the top-right corner of your file, you'll see a streamlined design that makes it easier to share files with others and/or specific groups of people in your organizations, control whether your file is searchable to groups with access, and to copy the file link. | Learn more

Data Loss Prevention for Drive helps protect sensitive data when users upload files to external Google Forms, now generally available

Find and insert GIFs faster on Google Chat on iOS Devices 
You can now easily browse, select and insert GIFs while using the Chat iOS mobile app. When enabled by your admin, select the “GIF” icon in the Google Chat compose bar. We hope this makes it easier for you to express yourself when interacting with your colleagues. | Learn more


Set a custom duration for "Do Not Disturb" in Google Chat on web and iOS devices 
You can now set the duration of your "Do Not Disturb" status to a specific date and time. We hope this feature gives you the flexibility to mute notifications the way it best suits you. This feature is now available on web, Android and iOS devices. | Learn more

New admin controls for access to discoverable spaces in Google Chat 
We’ve added the ability for Admins to set the default for newly created spaces and enable sharing scoped to specific audiences. | Learn more

Context-Aware Access remediator provides more context for access denials 
Admins using Context-Aware Access can now provide more information to end users when their access is blocked using the user remediation feature. | Learn more.

Mark your important tasks with a star in Google Tasks

Quick summary 

In Google Tasks, you can now mark important tasks with a star. This is similar to functionality that already exists in Drive today. Additionally, you’ll be able to view or sort your starred items across various tasks lists in the new starred view. 

We hope this update makes it easier for you to prioritize your tasks and quickly navigate to important tasks across your projects.

What’s changing

In Google Chat, you can now create personal tasks from individual or group messages. These will then be viewable by you in Google Tasks, the quick-access side panel, and Google Calendar if the task has a set date.

Why you’d use it 


This feature allows you to more easily stay on top of tasks that come out of conversations with your coworkers via Chat. Once you’ve created a personal task, you can add a due date and description, then quickly navigate back to the conversation.

  • End users: Visit the Help Center to learn more about adding or editing a task

Space descriptions and guidelines in Google Chat rolling out now
Earlier this year, we announced the ability for space managers to add descriptions and guidelines for their spaces. This feature is now available on mobile and will be gradually rolling out for web. | Learn more here and here.

Set recurring task end options directly in Google Tasks

Quick summary 

Currently, you can set the end option for a recurring task (never, on a certain date, or after X occurrences) by opening the task in Google Calendar. With this launch, you can also set this option directly in Google Tasks. This gives you more control over how and until when your tasks repeat.

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature. 
  • End users: These options will be available when creating or editing a task in Tasks. Visit the Help Center to learn more about setting up repeating tasks.

Google Voice calls between many European numbers are now included in Google Voice licenses

Manage overdue tasks in Google Calendar

Quick summary 

You can now easily see and manage your overdue tasks in Google Calendar. If you have uncompleted tasks that were due in the past 30 days, you will have an all day entry that will tell you how many tasks are pending from that timeframe. Clicking on that entry brings up the list of these pending tasks and you can directly edit or mark them as complete from this list.

By giving you a comprehensive list of uncompleted past tasks, right in Calendar, we hope that this helps you better keep track of your Tasks. The feature will be available on the web and on mobile. 


Getting started 

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature. 
  • End users: This feature will be ON by default for anyone that uses tasks in Calendar and can be turned OFF by hiding tasks in Google Calendar. Visit the Help Center to learn more about creating & viewing tasks in Calendar

Set tasks to repeat in Google Calendar

Quick launch summary

You can now set tasks to repeat in Google Calendar and customize the recurrence schedules, similar to other entry types in Calendar. This means you can:
  • Create tasks with recurrence rules Edit the recurrence rule of an existing task Set an "end condition" for a recurrence rule
Change the recurrence of a task in Calendar




We hope this change helps you get more things done in Google Workspace.
