Improving the Google Meet experience on foldable devices

Additional refinements to email notifications sent from Google Classroom
We’re updating the email notification experience in Google Classroom to make it easier for students and teachers to find the right information more efficiently in order to take action in Classroom. Introducing new keyboard shortcuts in Google Sheets
We’re adding new keyboard shortcuts to Google Sheets to help you increase your productivity and perform actions faster. Find what you need faster with new Google Drive organizational options
You will now have more control over how files and folders are displayed in various views within Google Drive for Web. For example, we’re adding a new drop-down menu in both grid and list layouts that will enable you to select whether folders should always appear "on top" or if they should be "mixed with files". Additionally, while in the Search view, the new menu will provide display options specifically related to your search, which returns results sorted by relevancy and modification date. | Rolling out to Rapid Release domains now; launch to Scheduled Release domains planned for June 7, 2023. | Learn more about viewing & reordering your files and folders.




Pin multiple participants from Google Meet Hardware devices
You can now pin multiple video tiles using Google Meet hardware. Pinning can be used to highlight speakers, presentations, and other key attendees in the video feed. Now you can use this functionality however you’re joining a meeting: desktop, mobile, or a conference room. | Available to all Google Workspace customers with Google Meet Hardware. | Learn more about pinning Google Meet participants.

Extending client-side encryption to chat messages in Google Meet
If you’re using client-side encryption for Meet, in-meeting chat will now be supported. Adding new capabilities to timeline view in Google Sheets

Set expirations for files in shared drives using Google Drive API
Developers will now be able to fully control file expirations via the Google Drive API (creating, reading, updating, deleting), and users will be able to see, but not edit file expirations in the sharing dialog. | Available to Google Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Education Plus customers only. | Learn more about setting expirations for files in shared drives using Google Drive API


Enable your users to report inappropriate messages for review
Admins can enable content reporting for their Google Chat users. Once a user has flagged a message, admins can find more information about the incident in the Security Investigation Tool and decide whether further action is needed. This feature is available for Google Chat on the web and mobile devices. | Available to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus customers only. | Learn more about reporting inappropriate messages

Contacts delegates can now update labels and manage “Other” contacts
We’re updating the functionality for delegated users to manage contact labels on behalf of their delegator via contacts.google.com. While this functionality was previously available in Gmail, they can now be managed directly at the source: Contacts. This will happen in two phases: 

Beginning this month, delegators will be prompted to review and re-approve access for their existing delegates. If existing delegates are not re-approved before July 2023, they will lose access to manage contacts. | Learn more about these additional capabilities for Contacts delegates and additional action required.

Improving consistency of Gmail data across the Security Investigation Tool and BigQuery
In August 2022, we announced the movement of the existing Gmail logs in BigQuery to Google Workspace logs and reports in BigQuery, creating a single space to access all of your Google Workspace audit events. 

To further improve this experience, you’ll see all Gmail log events from the Security Investigation Tool (SIT) in your Google Workspace logs and reports in BigQuery. This includes device types and post-delivery actions (for example open, delete, clicked links, and attachment downloads). | Learn more about the newly added columns.

Adding new capabilities to timeline view in Google Sheets

What’s changing

Last year, we introduced an interactive timeline view that allows you to track projects in Google Sheets. The timeline view enables you to easily interact with project information and can help you manage things like marketing campaigns, project milestones, schedules, cross-team collaboration, and more. 

Today, we’re adding the following capabilities to expand the timeline view feature: 
  • Enhanced formatting options, including card text truncation and the undo/redo option 
  • A card collapsed view that enables you to merge cards into a single row for each card group 
  • Print and download support

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.

Complete data-driven tasks faster with new smart chip data extraction in Google Sheets

What’s changing

In continuing our efforts to help you deliver more with smart canvas, we recently introduced additional smart chip functionality in Google Sheets. Building upon this, you’ll also be able to quickly extract information from smart chips for advanced sorting, filtering and analysis to drive your projects forward. 

With smart chip data extraction, you can enrich your Sheets with information from people, file, and events chips. More specifically, this feature allows you to pull out metadata associated with specific smart chips into its own cell, while maintaining a connection with the chip it was extracted from. 


For example, if you need to keep track of a set of documents, their owners and details, such as creation time or who last modified the file, you can do so by extracting those fields from the relevant file chips as shown below.

You can keep your extractions up to date by navigating to the “Refresh & manage” section of the extraction sidebar to update your data and reflect the latest changes.

Why you’d use it 

Smart chip data extraction allows you to track and organize data more easily, and also perform deeper analyses using data that is derived from smart chips. Useful actions include using file chips to understand when a document was last updated or using people chips to sort and filter employees based on job location to best delegate region specific tasks. 

Additional details 

You can also nest arrays of chip extractions to perform more complex analyses. The example below uses a range of people chips in B3:B11 to count the number of unique office locations for nine different individuals. Example formula extraction across range of people chips

Getting started 

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature. 
  • End users: 
    • To perform sidebar extraction: 
      • Open the data extractions sidebar (via either the Data menu, right clicking on a cell/range with people, event or file chips and navigating to "Data extractions," or clicking on the "Data extractions" link in people, event or file hover cards) 
      • Select the range that contains the chips you want to extract data from 
      • Choose what data you want to extract from the selected chips 
      • Pick the range where you want the data to be extracted to 
    • To perform formula extraction: 
      • Start by typing = in a cell where you want the information extracted 
      • Navigate to the cell or range with chips in them and select it 
      • Add a period after the cell or range of cells and choose from the autocomplete what to extract 
      • Accept the dialog confirming what will be extracted 
    • To refresh data in the data extraction sidebar: 
      • Open the extraction sidebar 
      • Click Refresh & manage 
      • Find the smart chips data you want to refresh 
      • Click Refresh data 
      • To refresh all smart chips data, click Refresh all at the bottom of the sidebar. 
    • Visit the Help Center to learn more about extracting data from smart chips in your Google Sheets.

Introducing additional smart chip functionality in Google Sheets

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we added place chips, finance chips, and expanded date capabilities to Google Sheets as the latest innovations in smart canvas. Today, we’re adding even more features that help you access and include rich, context-setting information directly in Sheets. 

Previously in Docs, we’re expanding YouTube chips to Sheets to help you more easily manage YouTube content. This feature allows you to add YouTube data, such as the title, description, and video preview, directly into your spreadsheet cell. Simply copy and paste a YouTube link into the cell, hover over it, and click the “Chip” option included in the “Replace URL” hovercard.

What’s changing

Starting today, we’re rolling out an enhanced tool finder at the top of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides to make it easier for users to discover commonly used tools and features. These refined tool-finding capabilities aim to help you quickly locate relevant features or functionality using your own words. For example, if you search “who last viewed this document,” the Activity dashboard will surface. 

If you open the enhanced tool finder immediately after you create a file, you’ll notice suggestions for common actions users take when preparing a new document, spreadsheet, or presentation, such as:
  • Page setup, Dropdown, Meeting notes in Docs
  • Insert rows/columns, merge cells, and freeze rows/columns in Sheets
  • Page setup, Spell check, Edit theme in Slides
Once you begin editing, you can find recent actions by clicking into the tool finder for easy access to your previously used features. 

Prior to this launch, you could find features by navigating to Help>Search the menus. Starting today, that will redirect you to the enhanced tool finder. After a short transition period, the redirect will be removed and the tool finder will live permanently in the toolbar.

Move folders from My Drive to shared drives
Earlier this year, we introduced a beta that allows end users to move folders from My Drive into shared drives. Multi-instance support now available for Google Keep on large screen Android devices 
Following the recent update to view Google Keep notes on the home screen of Android devices, we’re introducing the ability to open a second instance of the Keep app on the same device. Having two windows open side-by-side enables better insight into your notes and gives you more ways to work with, display, and organize your content across Google Workspace.

Connected Sheets for Looker now available for all Looker-hosted instances

What’s changing

In 2020, we introduced Connected Sheets on Google Sheets, to help you analyze, visualize, and share billions of rows of data from your spreadsheets. Since then, we’ve made numerous improvements to the feature, including the recent announcement that you can now explore Google Cloud hosted Looker instances using Connected Sheets.


Today, we’re expanding upon this by making Connected Sheets available for Looker instances hosted on non-Google Cloud providers like AWS and Azure.

Getting started 

  • Admins: 
  • End users: 
    • If enabled by your admin, follow these steps to explore Looker data using Connected Sheets: 
      • In a Google Sheet navigate to “Data” > “Data connectors” > “Connect to Looker” > enter in the URL of a Looker instance, for example: https://example.looker.com. You will then need to authorize Sheets to access your Looker data. After you connect to an Explore, you can see the available data and continue your analysis in Google Sheets. 
      • Visit the Help Center to learn more about Connected Sheets for Looker.
