Pre-configure meeting notes, recordings, and transcripts from the Calendar invite

What’s changing

Meeting hosts can now pre-configure meeting notes, meeting recordings, and meeting transcripts from the Calendar invite. This helps ensure that these specific artifacts are automatically captured, reducing the need for the meeting host to turn them on during the meeting, removing awkward pauses or the risk of forgetting to turn them on all together.

You can configure these artifacts from the Calendar invite by going to Settings > Meeting records and selecting which artifacts you want automatically applied

Additional details

Update on the availability of translated captions for some Google Workspace customers
As we previously announced, translated captions in Google Meet will be exclusively available to Gemini for Google Workspace customers. This will go into effect starting January 22, 2025, when existing and new customers will no longer have access to translated captions through their Google Workspace subscription. At this time, translated captions will only be available in the following Gemini add-ons: Gemini Enterprise, AI Meetings and Messaging, and Gemini Education premium.

We will continue to invest in and improve translated captions with the additional languages and automatic language detection. In addition to translated captions, the Gemini for Workspace add-ons offer other generative AI features such as enhanced audio and image quality on meetings, take notes for me (in alpha), and more — use this link to learn more

Google Meet now supports high definition video for meeting recording and devices

What’s changing

Full HD video content is now available for recorded meetings
For recorded meetings in Google Meet, we’re increasing the maximum resolution for the speaker’s video feed from 720p to 1080p. Meet already supports 1080p recordings for presented content — together, these enhancements increase viewing quality of meeting recordings.

Sending full HD video is now available on all computers with 1080p cameras
We’re also pleased to announce that 1080p video resolution is now available on all computers with a 1080p capable camera. 1080p resolution is off by default and requires the user to opt-in via the settings menu. Note that 1080p is only sent when recording is enabled or when one or more users have pinned the 1080p-enabled user on a screen large enough to render the 1080p video feed. In those specific scenarios, additional bandwidth will be required to send 1080p video, and Meet will automatically adjust the resolution if the device is bandwidth constrained.

Getting started

  • Admins:
    • Video content and screen shared content in meeting recordings will be in 1080p by default. Visit the Help Center to learn more about turning Meet recording on or off for your organization.
    • Note that there is no admin control for sending 1080p video. It is off by default and requires the user to opt-in.

Google Meet add-ons are now available on Android devices

What’s changing

We’re expanding access to Google Meet add-ons, now to Android devices, so you can find, install, and use third and first-party applications right from within the Meet app. Meet add-ons were already available on desktop devices. Expansion to Android devices gives users more flexibility in accessing third-party apps while they’re using Meet on the go. Meet add-ons on Android devices can be found in the “Activities” panel, where you typically see features like polls and Q&A. If you have desktop add-ons that are not currently available on mobile, they’ll be categorized as “Unavailable.”

Add-ons in the activity panel

Getting started

  • Admins:
    • The visibility of add-ons is controlled by the supplemental add-on setting, which has separate toggles for the visibility of Google add-ons and featured third-party add-ons. You can review your configuration by going to Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Google Meet > Meet video settings.

    • Important note: this setting governs add-on availability for both the desktop and Android app. How you configure this setting will determine what types of add-ons your users will see. If you turn these settings off, they will not see any add-ons.

    • Visit the Help Center to learn more about the supplemental add-ons setting for Google Meet

  • End users: Depending on how your admin has configured your experience, you may or may not be able to access add-ons in Google Meet using your Android device. Visit the Help Center to learn more about using add-ons with Google Meet.

*We will eventually add the “Featured” category and “Get add-ons” (plus sign) button to align with the desktop experience. We'll share more info on the Workspace Updates blog when available.

Switch between edit, view and comment mode in Google Slides
We’re making it easier for you to switch between different modes in Google Slides. For example, if you’d like to hide comments within a presentation or avoid accidental edits, you can switch to view mode. Choosing commenting mode hides all options associated with editing, but still allows you to read and add comments. To change your mode, navigate to the View > Mode > select a mode. | Rolling out to Rapid Release domains now; launch to Scheduled Release domains planned for June 20, 2024. | Available to Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts. | Learn more about switching view mode on Google Slides

Introducing adaptive audio in Google Meet: creating ad-hoc meeting spaces with multiple laptops

What’s changing

In this hybrid work era, we hear from customers that finding a video conferencing room to join a meeting is often difficult. With “adaptive audio,” you and your team can join Google Meet using multiple laptops in close proximity without awkward echos and audio feedback. This is a great benefit for organizations with not enough video conferencing rooms or without resources for dedicated conference room equipment.

Adaptive audio in Meet will automatically detect the presence of multiple laptops in the room and synchronize the microphones and speakers for a seamless audio experience. This allows teams to create ad-hoc meeting spaces anywhere with just their laptops where everyone can be heard clearly, without the inconvenience of crowding around a single laptop.

Most importantly, adaptive audio gives users the flexibility to join meetings when meeting rooms are not available, meeting room hardware is not working, or for smaller organizations, when there isn't dedicated video conferencing equipment in every room. This also gives organizations the ability to use non-typical meeting spaces such as lounges, cafes, and other impromptu locations.

The microphone and speakers of each participant are used to ensure everyone can hear and be heard well.

When multiple participants are joining a meeting from the same room, “adaptive audio” is automatically activated. Google Meet notes audio is merged and participants are grouped together in the people panel.

Getting started

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.
  • End users: This feature will be ON by default and can be turned off by the user by going to Settings > Audio > Adaptive audio. Visit the Help Center to learn more about using adaptive audio in Google Meet.

Filter, sort, and display your Google Meet hardware devices by product service status

What’s changing

You can currently filter, sort, and display your Google Meet hardware devices by whether they are online, offline, or experiencing an application load-failure. Today, we’re expanding these parameters to include whether the Calendar and Jamboard services are turned OFF.

The connection between your Meet hardware devices and these two Google products are critical for connecting and collaborating. Allowing admins to filter for devices that match this criteria will help them identify potential gaps in hardware devices and product configurations, which they can quickly rectify.

For example, if Calendar is turned off on a Google Meet hardware device, it will no longer show the upcoming meeting list when booked for a meeting. Having the Jamboard* service turned off means that the Desk 27 and Board 65 devices will no longer be able to launch Jamboard directly on the device. These services may have been previously turned off in error, and this new capability allows admins to correct it, making the services available again to their users. Note that Jamboard 55-inch devices are not impacted.

You can filter your devices by going to Menu > Devices > Google Meet hardware > Devices > “Device status” and then select the criteria to filter by.

Breakout room information is now included in Google Meet attendance reports

What’s changing

We’re now including breakout room attendance as part of attendance reporting in Google Meet. Attendance reports help meeting organizers keep track of who attended their meetings and for how long, which can be challenging during larger meetings or while presenting. This becomes more complicated when using breakout rooms to divide meeting participants into smaller groups. Adding breakout room attendance makes for a more comprehensive report and reduces the burden on meeting hosts to track breakout room attendance manually.

Getting started

  • Admins: Visit the Help Center to learn more about letting organizers get reports on meeting attendance.
  • End users: When enabled by your admin, attendance reports will automatically be sent to the meeting host. Attendance reports for breakout rooms will be in their own tab in the spreadsheet. Visit the Help Center to learn more about attendance tracking
